Presente

Ser vs estar

Same trap as the crossword. Son las seis vs están cansados. If you can swap in se siente or está ubicado, it is estar.

Pretérito vs imperfecto

Pretérito moves the plot: ayer, de repente, una vez. Imperfecto is the scene: siempre, mientras, de niño.

Irregular pretérito

Doubles: freído / frito, imprimido / impreso, proveído / provisto. La puerta está abierta is an adjective, not a compound tense.

Progresivo, gustar, two verbs

Presente progresivo

estar + gerundio. yendo leyendo durmiendo pidiendo diciendo

Gustar and friends

Verb agrees with the thing, not the person. Le encantan las películas. Same for encantar, interesar, doler, faltar. Look at the noun after the verb. Plural noun, plural verb.

Dos verbos juntos

Second verb is infinitive. After decidir / querer / necesitar, no extra a. Quería vivir, not quería a vivir.

How not to eat it

• Do Transforma el texto on a random paragraph tonight. Past to present, past to future.
• If you hear a sentence, lock the time word first (ayer / siempre / mañana / si yo fuera tú), then pick the tense. Don't conjugate and then hunt for why.
• Gustar: look at the noun after the verb.
• Ser / estar: if you can swap in se siente or está ubicado, it's estar.
• Don't drop accents on está, estáis, hablaré, comió. She marks those.
• If there is a short write, drop in one palabra sofisticada and one frase de oro. Empty interesante / divertido is how you look like you didn't come to class.
